Kids get into the garden as part of healthy eating education

Congratulations to Capel Sounds Educational Child Care Centre and Kindergarten in Tootgarook! The Centre has recently put into place some amazing ideas to create a healthy environment for its children, staff and families.

The Centre focused on promoting healthy eating. Children were actively engaged in the kindergarten's kitchen garden, where they loved to spend time   planting seeds, caring for plants and harvesting fresh produce. A favourite activity for the children is preparing delicious food using the fresh produce from their garden. “I like tasting new things from our garden,” says Oliver who attends the Centre.

Capel Sounds Educational Child Care Centre began its journey to become a health promoting early childhood setting in 2017, when it joined the Achievement Program. The health promotion team at Penininsula Health has supported the Centre to implement the program and achieve best-practice health and wellbeing targets for the different Health Priority Areas.

Centre director Wendy Stoffels says, "We were thrilled to receive recognition for the Health Priority Areas of Healthy Eating & Oral Health and Physical Activity & Movement this year through the Achievement Program. We were also awarded advanced standing for Sun Protection, which is very important at our centre.”

Next the Centre will be working on the Mental Health & Wellbeing targets and also have plans to host a Health and Wellbeing expo for the community later this year.
