It’s game on at Echuca Regional Health!

Monday 15 February, 2021

Over 819 staff members from Echuca Regional Health (ERH), an Achievement Program member since 2017, regularly boosts their physical activity by participating in local community initiatives such as Active April (Get Active Victoria). Over the years, activities have included tai chi, yoga, HIIT workouts, bocce games and walking groups, which has helped create a positive environment for staff to get active.

However, the true star of the show is the Healthier Campaspe competition, a shire-wide friendly rivalry among seven community organisations led by local CEOs. The competition encourages all employees to get active for 30 minutes a day for 30 days and the winning organisation is awarded a plaque.

An ERH employee describes the active environment as infectious and says the enthusiasm is shared with friends and family, motivating them to join the fun and get active, too. “I got my whole family involved, we participated in active transport, and one year on, we still keep the changes up,” the ERH employee said.

ERH believes the free and fun initiatives offer a great opportunity for staff and the wider community to get active and support one another. With the benefits expanding further than just increasing staff’s physical activity. The fun and active environment at ERH, spurred on by the workplace initiatives has improved staff morale, fostered a positive atmosphere, and strengthened community connections and partnerships through local offers and activities.

ERH also provides information about local physical activity opportunities and shares information on the benefits of physical activity in newsletters, on social media and in orientation packs for new staff members. Sit-stand desks and added movement reminders on desks and phones are offered to reduce sedentary time. Eligible employees can also participate in the free Life! program by Diabetes Victoria, which focuses on goal setting and the benefits of keeping active.

ERH have achieved Physical Activity recognition through the Achievement Program and are well on their way to achieving the final recognition of Healthy Eating.
